We had often talked about moving to warmer climates come retirement so we decided we’d take a little trip. Sure, we had travelled many winters to warming climates to ‘take the edge off winter’ but talks between us about finding a winter home were picking up. Sometimes over breakfast. Sometimes over a coffee or tea. Always, when we jumped in our cold vehicle. So, when winter hit us hard a few years ago it was time to move beyond talk to action. We would take a trip south and look around. You know, take 10 days at an airBnB and really scope things out. It couldn’t be that difficult, right?
Well, we were in for a real ride!…
In this day and age you think that the world and all its information is at our fingertips. We ‘google’ our questions, we ask Siri and Alexa to help us figure this or that out… in short, we look online for everything. But finding unbiased information from real people wasn’t possible. We had to work hard to gather up information from so many sources including many of the people we have met. Phone calls, snail mail, and very limited internet information helped us begin to understand.
On our first vacation visit to Arizona we arrived at the international airport knowing so very little about Snowbirding. When we arrived the second year we had just bought a place sight unseen a few days earlier and had no idea what to expect. We’ve often looked back on that day and thought “there, we have it figured out”. That couldn’t have been further from the truth.
As we searched, experienced, and lived the snowbird life we began to compile a list of the questions we had prior to, during, and after joining snowbird life. We thought if we could make just one more person or couple more comfortable about snowbird life we should do it. So we did!
